For those who wish to stay a little longer
Other sights not to be missed in this part of the Scheldt valley are the Polders of Kruibeke – 600 hectares (± 1500 acres) of outstanding nature. It is a paradise for mammals, birds, bees, trees, herbs and flowers. It is also a wonderful oasis of peace for walkers and cyclists. Basel itself is a protected townscape. And anyone walking through it will immediately understand why.
As well as the Wissekerke castle grounds, other gems are the village square, parish church and small-scale buildings. You can also discover more fine heritage in Rupelmonde: the last working tidal mill in Flanders. This popular village is also home to Graventoren (the Count’s Tower), which didn’t leave Mercator with the best memories... He was imprisoned there after being accused of heresy.
